Guizot organised primary education with his law of 28 June 1833, which required every commune to open a boys' school with a teacher who was a public servant, and every département to open a teacher training college. In total, during the July monarchy, the number of children enrolled in primary education doubled, and the Guizot law has remained one of the cornerstones of the French education system.
