The Calvados Departmental Council's Guizot Prize (1994-2012)

In 1993, at the joint initiative of Madame d'Ornano, President of the Calvados Departmental Council, the great historian François Furet, later of the Académie française, and the Association François Guizot, which brings together descendants of the statesman The Calvados General Council's Guizot Prize was created to commemorate François Guizot, MP for Calvados from 1830 to 1848. The prize is awarded every two years for a work of history, social studies or political analysis that is accessible to a wide readership.

On the occasion of its premiere at Val-Richer on 24 September 1993, François Furet said:

«This prize is at the crossroads of several loyalties: the loyalty of the admirable family [...] the loyalty of Normandy to its great men [...] the loyalty of the community of French historians and intellectuals who, over the last fifteen years, have rediscovered Guizot».»
