The Prix François Guizot-Institut de France was created in 2013, under the patronage of the three academies of which Guizot was a member (Académie française, des sciences morales et politiques, des inscriptions et des belles lettres), on the joint initiative of Jean-Claude Casanova, Chairman of the jury, Gabriel de Broglie, Chancellor of the Institut and the Association François Guizot, which brings together descendants of the statesman. It follows on from the Prix Guizot du Conseil général du Calvados (1993-2012), established to commemorate François Guizot, Member of Parliament for Calvados from 1830 to 1848, on the initiative of Anne d'Ornano, President of the Conseil général du Calvados, François Furet, of the Académie française and the Association François Guizot.
It is awarded every two years to the author of a major work of history, study of the contemporary world, societies or political analysis recently published or broadcast, accessible to a wide audience.
The winner is chosen by an international jury, first chaired by François Furet of the Académie Française and now chaired by Eric Roussel of the Institut.
