François Guizot Prize from the Académie Française
The Prix Guizot was created in 1993 to commemorate François Guizot, Member of Parliament for Calvados from 1830 to 1848, on the joint initiative of Madame d'Ornano, President of the Calvados General Council, the great historian François Furet, later a member of the Académie française, and the Association François Guizot-Val-Richer, which brings together descendants of the statesman. The prize is awarded every two years for a work of history, social studies or political analysis that is accessible to a wide readership. On the occasion of its creation, François Furet declared that «this prize is at the confluence of several loyalties: the loyalty of the admirable family [...] the loyalty that Normandy shows to its great men [...] the loyalty of the community of French historians and intellectuals who, over the last fifteen years, have been rediscovering Guizot».
